The United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois has given preliminary approval on the proposed class action settlement in the case of Douglas v. The Western Union Company. The agreed upon settlement amount in this case is $8,500,000. The proposed class consists of individuals who received unsolicited text messages to their wireless telephones from or on behalf of Western Union, which included up to 823,472 class members. Under the proposed settlement, the named plaintiff in the case will get an “incentive award” of $5,000, and the plaintiff’s law firm will get $2,891,000 in attorney fees.
